Don Gerend (2011) North

Sammamish, the youngest city in Western Washington, incorporated in 1999. Don was one of the original Councilmembers and has been reelected three times since. He believed from the beginning of Sammamish that through close ties with fellow cities we would all benefit the most. During these eleven formative years in the history of Sammamish, Don actively participated in local and regional affairs, including serving on the Regional Transit Committee, Board of Directors of Suburban Cities Association, Chair of Eastside Transportation Partnership, Board of Eastside Fire & Rescue and on the Puget Sound Regional Council Transportation Policy Board (chair of the Transportation 2040 Working Group). Currently, he is on the NLC Information Technology & Communications Steering Committee, the Association of Washington Cities Board, AWC Legislative Committee, AWC Convention Committee, AWC Federal Legislative Subcommittee and Chair of the AWC Education Subcommittee. 

 

As a former rocket scientist, college professor and commercial real estate syndicator, Don has the number crunching and analytical skills which are so often called for in meeting the varied demands of local and regional governance issues. He has been selected three times by his fellow councilmembers to serve as Mayor of Sammamish.  (Jan 2011)

Bob Sternoff (2012) North

Bob Sternoff has served on the City Council since December 13, 2005 and is beginning his second term on the SCA Board. He is a 52-year resident of the Kirkland area. Bob earned a B.A. in Speech Communications from the UW.

Prior to serving on the Kirkland Council, he served 8 years on the Kirkland Park Board including 3 terms as Chair. He also was a founding member of the Downtown Action Team where he served as Vice Chair of the Executive Committee, Chair of the Parking Subcommittee and Vice Chair of the Lakeshore Plaza Design and Development Sub-Committee. Bob has also served as a member of the Juanita Beach Advisory Committee, Skate Board Park Committee and 2002 Park Bond Steering Committee. He chaired the Annexation Sub-Committee and currently Chairs the Public Safety Committee and serves on the Economic Development Sub-Committee. He is Chair of the SCA GMPC and Enterprise Seattle Caucus. He is the SCA Caucus Vice-Chair for the Regional Transit Committee and PSRC Growth Management Planning Board and a member of the PSRC Transportation 2040 Prioritization Working Group. He has also served as Vice Chair of the SCA Finance Committee.
 
Bob owns and manages several diversified Real Estate development companies that have won numerous awards for design excellence. His previous work experience includes over 10 years in national and international transportation and technology.

David Baker (2011) North

David is Mayor of Kenmore serving in that position since 2004.  He has been active on SCA’s Public Issues Committee since its inception.  David also serves as SCA’s representative on the King County Solid Waste Committee, Joint Resolutions Committee, and the Regional Transportation Committee.  He also serves on the AWC Legislative Committee; NLC Information Technology Committee (Co-Chair); SeaShore Transportation Forum and is a Board Member for Friends of Fircrest.  He serves on the Board of Directors for the National League of Cities, also SCA Board of Directors.

David has a PhD in Neuroanatomy from Iowa State University and is the owner of Vision Systems Engineering, a circuit design and machine vision corporation.  He also owns an Internet-based cell phone service company that specializes in cell phone repair and accessories.  He has offices in Kenmore with branches in Sevenoaks, England, and Sao Paulo, Brazil and is an engineering consultant to many corporations. (Jan 2011)

 

Dave Hutchinson (2012) North

David is beginning his third term as a member of the SCA Board and, in 2010, served as Vice President of SCA.  He serves as the Vice Chair of the King County Public Health Board representing the Suburban Cities Association and was appointed to the PSRC Policy Committee.  Hutchinson organized the North County mayors group which meets monthly.  He has served as Board Chair of the Washington Poison Center, the YMCA Board, and the North King County United Way Council and numerous other boards and committees. He is currently serving as an alternate to the Suburban Cities PIC and was a member of the Nominating Committee.

At the State level, David served on the Association of Washington Cities Board representing District 7 for eight years.  During his time on the Board, he served on the Resolutions and Legislative Committees, served on the Conference Committee and was appointed a member of the Streamlined Sales Tax Negotiations Committee. He also chaired the Nominations Committee one year.  (Jan 2011)

 

Margaret Harto (2011) South

Margaret has completed three years on the Suburban Cities Association Board of Directors and served as member-at-large of the Executive Committee in 2010. 

She has been a member of the SCA Education Committee serving as Vice Chair and Chair (2010).  Margaret currently is a member of the SCA caucus on the King County Joint Recommendation Committee for CDBG funding.  Margaret is committed to bringing the message of the SCA vision and mission to local elected officials so that we might effectively address our concerns through mutual support and respect.

 

Margaret has been a member of the Covington City Council for 9 years and served as Mayor Pro Tem for two years.  Elected Mayor in 2006, she is currently serving her third consecutive term.   Margaret represents the City of Covington as an advisory member on the Governance Board of the KFD Regional Fire Authority where she also serves as chair of the Citizens Advisory Committee.  Prior to her City Council appointment in 2002, Margaret was one of the original appointees to the Covington Youth & Family Services Commission, serving as Chair from 1998-2002.  She has earned recognition as a Certified Municipal Leader from the Association of Washington Cities. 

 

Margaret’s interest in human services and child advocacy is reflected in her 40 years of involvement as a community representative and board member at the local, regional and national levels of numerous organizations including United Way of King County, SKCCN, Kent Youth & Family Services, Reach Out Covington, Pacific Northwest District Kiwanis, American Cancer Society; and she is a past president of the Washington State PTA.  (Jan 2011)

Lucy Krakowiak (2011) South
Lucy Krakowiak has been serving on the Burien City Council since January 2004. She operates an independent business in Burien.

Lucy has represented the Suburban Cities Association on the Growth Management Planning Council (GMPC) since 2005. She has also served as Burien’s alternate to the SCA Public Issues Committee (PIC) for three years.  She was selected by the Association of Washington Cities (AWC) in 2007 to serve on the AWC Housing Policy Advisory Group. In the last half of 2007 she also served as the City’s alternate on the South County Area Transportation Board (SCATBd).  (Jan 2011)

Denis Law (2011) South
Denis is Mayor of Renton, serving in that position since 2008. He is the former president of Puget Sound Publishing Co. in Renton and former publisher of the Renton Reporter, Business Report and Renton Magazine. Denis is past chairman of the Greater Renton Chamber of Commerce, past president of the Renton Rotary Club, a past board member of the Renton Technical College Foundation and the Renton Community Foundation, and has served on the Downtown Renton Association.

Denis currently serves on several boards and committees including PSRC Executive Board, Valley Communications Center Administrative Board, Communities In Schools of Renton Advisory Committee, and the South Correctional Entity (SCORE) Administrative Board. He is also chair of Renton Chamber of Commerce’s Blue Ribbon Committee and the Firemen's Pension Board.  (Jan 2011)

Jamie Perry (2012) South
Jamie Perry has been serving on the Kent City Council for two years where she chairs the Economic and community development committee and is a member of the operations committee. She is also currently serving as the Council President. She is a life long resident of the Kent area. Regionally, Jamie has represented SCA as an alternate on the Growth Management Planning Council, is a member of the WRIA 9 board and is on the board of directors for the Kent Regional Fire Authority.

Jamie graduated from the William O. Douglas Honors College at Central Washington University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Policy.  She then went on to obtain her J.D. in the spring of 2006 from the University of Oregon Law School.  After law school Jamie returned to her hometown of Kent, Washington and currently works as a Family Law attorney at Hanis Irvine Prothero, PLLC.   (Jan 2011)

Dave Hill (2011) South Valley Cities
Dave Hill was elected to the Algona City Council in November 2003 and served two years as Mayor Pro Tem before being appointed Mayor in October 2006. Dave was elected Mayor in November 2007. Dave has represented Algona on the Public Issues Committee since 2005. Dave served as Chair of the Small Cities Sub-committee for two years and Chair of the Nominating Committee for two years and is a member of the Nominating Committee in 2011.

Dave has represented Suburban Cities Association on the King Conservation District Advisory Committee as a member, and the Regional Transit Committee as an alternate. In 2011 he will be an alternate to the PSRC Executive Committee and a member of the Regional Transit Committee.

 

Dave also serves his community as Vice Chair of Finance on the Auburn Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and is Algona’s Representative to SCATbD for over 5 years and was elected Vice Chair of SCATbD for 2010 and 2011. Dave is on the Board of Governors of Valley Regional Fire Authority and was Chair for 2010. 

 

Dave has a Bachelors of Science in accounting from Central Washington University and a Masters in Taxation from Golden Gate University. Dave is nationally licensed as an Enrolled Agent and represents taxpayers at the Internal Revenue Service and various State and Local Agencies in multiple states.  This educational and professional background with Dave’s position as a strong mayor gives him a unique perspective on the current financial crisis.  (Jan 2011)

Matt Larson (2012) Snoqualmie Valley Cities

Mayor Larson has been involved in the City of Snoqualmie government for the past 11 years. He sat briefly on the Parks Board, spent two years as Chair of the Planning Commission, served four years on the City Council (two years as Mayor Pro-tem), and has just completed his fifth year as mayor. The mayor has been recognized as an Advanced Certified Municipal Leader by the Association of Washington Cities. He has served two terms as President of the Snoqualmie Valley Governments Association and serves on the King County Flood Control District Advisory Committee. He graduated from St. John’s University in Minnesota. He has been married for 26 years and is the proud father of four children. Fifteen members of his immediate and extended family are proud to call Snoqualmie home.  (Jan 2011)

Sonny Putter (2011) PIC Chair
Sonny Putter was elected into office in 1994 and will serve through 2011. He served as Mayor of Newcastle from 2000 to 2001. Sonny Putter was a Commissioner of King County Fire District No. 25, was instrumental in coordinating the campaign to incorporate the City of Newcastle, has served in local and regional government for the past 17 years, is Vice Chair of the Eastside Transportation Partnership, Newcastle’s representative on the I-405 Corridor Program Executive Committee and on the Eastside Corridor Tolling Study Executive Advisory Group.

At the State level, Sonny served on the Legislative Committee of the Association of Washington Cities. He also earned accreditation as an Advanced Certified Municipal Leader from the Association. Sonny is a founding board member of the Greater Newcastle Chamber of Commerce. He has been an officer and board member of several local charitable organizations. Professionally, Sonny is a Certified Public Accountant, Registered Investment Advisor and owner of Friedman, Putter and Company, an Investment Advisory firm registered with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Sonny Putter is a graduate of the University of Puget Sound with a Master of Business Administration degree. He also graduated from McGill University with a Master of Science (Applied) degree. Sonny was the recipient of the Elijah Watt Sells National Accounting Award and the Jack and Charlotte Spitzer Young Leadership Award. He is a member of Phi Kappa Phi Honorary Society, a member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists and a Fellow of the Geological Society of Canada. (Jan 2011)

Ken Hearing (2011) Immediate Past President

Ken was first elected Mayor of North Bend in 2003 and was re-elected in 2009.  He sits on the Mountains to Sound Greenway Advisory Board and is a member of the AWC Small Cities Advisory Committee.  Elected to represent the Snoqualmie Valley Cities, Ken has served on the SCA Board since 2006.  He has been active in the Snoqualmie Valley Government’s Association and served for many years on the Snoqualmie Valley Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Committee.  He currently sits on the Food Stakeholders Advisory Committee to the King County Health Department representing non chain small restaurants.  Ken has owned and operated a small restaurant business for 16 years and is a North Bend native.  (Jan 2011)

Tony Piasecki (2011) City Manager/Administrator Rep
Tony Piasecki is the city manager for the City of Des Moines, a position he has held since March 2002.  Previous to being city manager, Tony had been Des Moines’ assistant city manager from August 1996 to his appointment as city manager.  Before coming to Des Moines, he worked for the City of Phoenix, Arizona, serving as the administrator of the Water Services Department, Customer Services Division (1990-1996), management assistant in the Deputy City Manager’s Office (1985-1990), and management intern (1985-1986).  Mr. Piasecki received a Master of Public Affairs from the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin, and a Bachelor of Science from the University of Iowa.  (Jan 2011)
